Common Issues & Fault Codes

Fuel Inefficiency

Unlike manual transmissions that rely on solid gears and a single clutch, a DSG (dual-clutch) transmission uses two separate clutches—one handling the odd-numbered gears and the other managing the even-numbered gears. This setup allows for smoother gear shifts but can sometimes reduce fuel efficiency. Our approach fine-tunes the DSG’s gears and clutches to optimize performance and deliver improved fuel economy.

Mechatronic Failure

When the gearbox software detects a malfunction, it can automatically switch the system into failsafe mode. In this mode, the vehicle is restricted to a single gear to protect the gearbox from further damage. Drivers will usually notice flashing PRNDS lights on the dashboard, or additional fault codes displayed that point to the reason behind the shift into failsafe mode. Because these issues can stem from a variety of internal failures, a simple inspection is rarely enough. Accurate diagnosis requires advanced DSG diagnostic tools and expertise. That’s why we work with specialized centres equipped to pinpoint the exact cause of the fault, identify the broken link in the system, and carry out the necessary repairs or replacements to restore full performance.

Noisy Bearings

A persistent metallic noise while driving is often a sign of worn-out bearings inside the transmission system. These bearings play a crucial role in supporting moving parts and ensuring smooth, quiet operation. When they begin to fail, the grinding or whining noise you hear is an early warning signal that shouldn’t be ignored. Left unresolved, the wear can escalate quickly, leading to severe damage across the transmission and potentially resulting in a complete system failure—an extremely costly repair. The smart approach is to act early: as soon as you notice the noise, have the bearings inspected and replaced with new ones. This proactive step not only eliminates the irritation of the sound but also protects the gearbox and extends the overall life of your vehicle.

Other Issues

While the problems mentioned above are among the most common with DSG transmission gearboxes, there’s always the possibility of encountering less typical or entirely new faults. In some cases, a straightforward adjustment within the gearbox can resolve multiple issues at once. In others, especially with units that have aged or suffered significant wear, a complete clutch and gear replacement may be necessary. Because every gearbox has its own history and pattern of use, it’s essential to have yours assessed by a workshop that takes the time to understand the specific problems affecting your unit. This tailored approach ensures that the root cause is identified and the most effective, long-term solution is applied.
